Arthaland, the country’s foremost developer of sustainable and green properties, is the only real estate company from the Philippines selected by the World Green Building Council to become part of its Building A Better Future film series produced by BBC StoryWorks.
With buildings and the construction sector producing almost 40 percent of the world’s carbon emissions, the series explores what this industry is doing to become more sustainable and to help us lead happier, healthier lives.
The Philippines is now at a critical juncture in its urbanization process — with the population in cities projected to increase by approximately 35 million over the next 25 years — energy reduction in new building design, construction, and operation has become of paramount importance in the last decade. As the only publicly-listed property developer with a 100-percent green portfolio poised to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030, Arthaland is leading the charge to place the country at the forefront of the green building initiative.

“Developing and promoting green buildings is our way of supporting the country’s rapid growth and urbanization while protecting the environment. Throughout the years, we have delivered renowned and well-received developments which serve as proof of concept that sustainable development can be done and can be made profitable in the Philippines. We hope that our success inspires other developers to follow suit,” said Jaime González, vice chairman and president of Arthaland.
Arthaland’s short film Fighting climate change with green buildings, encapsulates how innovative, economically viable and sustainable construction can be done in emerging markets all over the world, paving the way for sustainable building initiatives in developing countries. Although being green brings along incremental costs, the challenge is not only to look for ways to be more efficient but also to consider these costs to be an investment to protect the environment for the future generations. This way, Arthaland hopes to give greater confidence in clean and green solutions, a new hope for a country facing such devastating threats from the impact of climate change.
